Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC - Overview

Starting December 29, 2009 the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC replaces the Machinery Directive 98/37/EC. There is no transition period so as of this date manufacturers of machinery must indicate the new 2006/42/EC Directive on their Declaration of Conformity.
Significant changes are in store for manufacturers exporting equipment to the European Union (EU).
The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC requires manufacturers exporting machinery to the European Union (EU) to indicate on their Declaration of Conformities the name and address of a company/person in the EU authorized to compile their Technical File.
In order to assist our customers in meeting this new requirement, we offer our customers based in the United-States to be their Authorized EU Contact or if need be their Authorized EU Representative.
Other changes to the Machinery Directive include:
- Clarifying the applicability of the Machinery Directive relative to other Directives such as the Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC or the Lift Directive 95/16/EC. For example domestic household appliances are clearly excluded from the scope of the Machinery Directive.
- A detailed list of safety components which can be updated to cover new products.
- Clarifications concerning risk assessments, risk requirements, integration of safety devices, etc.
- Provisions for improved market surveillance.
It is also very important for manufacturers to consider the introduction of revised EU Safety Standards that come into effect at the same time as the Machinery Directive. For example, the EN ISO 13849-1 Standard will replace the EN 954-1 Standard.
